On a warm Saturday evening in Las Vegas, on May 17, 2008, the life of 25-year-old Hispanic male Jose Gilberto-Guerro was tragically cut short. He and two friends were gathered near a car on Kolendo Court, in the vicinity of Decatur Boulevard and Twain Avenue, when a dark-colored Honda, believed to be either an Accord or a Civic, approached them. The time was approximately 10:10 p.m., and the night was about to take a violent turn.
From within the Honda, a passenger began to shout what
authorities identified as gang-related slang. Immediately following the verbal volley, multiple gunshots erupted from the vehicle, striking all three men. The car, described as having tinted windows and light-colored primer spots on its front fender, then sped away from the scene, leaving chaos and bloodshed in its wake. The suddenness of the attack left the victims with little chance to react.
The aftermath was grim. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and Jose Gilberto-Guerro, along with a second victim, was transported to University Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Guerrero succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead. The second man taken to the same hospital survived his injuries. A third victim was taken to Spring Valley Hospital, where he was treated for his wounds and subsequently released.
In the initial stages of the investigation, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reached out to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the individuals responsible. Authorities stated that despite the gang-related utterances from the suspect vehicle, there was no indication that Guerrero or the other two victims were involved in any gang activity. They were simply, as one official described, "minding their own business, drinking beer." To date, there have been no arrests made in connection with the murder of Jose Gilberto-Guerro, and the case remains an unsolved drive-by shooting. The suspects and their motives are still unknown.
