In the late afternoon of August 15, 2015, a burst of gunfire shattered the desert heat in the east valley of Las Vegas, Nevada, leaving 28-year-old Hispanic male Jairo Garcia mortally wounded. The Clark County coroner's office would later confirm Garcia's identity and the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the left side of his body. The incident, which unfolded around 4:30 p.m.
in the 3900 block of East Owens Avenue, was described by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as a shootout.
Responding officers discovered Garcia inside a white 1990s GMC Yukon, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A gun was also found in his vehicle. Garcia, who was noted to have gang-related tattoos, was rushed to University Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries. The shooting was quickly suspected to be gang-related, though a definitive motive was not immediately established by police.
Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic exchange of gunfire between Garcia's Yukon and a silver or gray 2015 Chrysler 200. The Chrysler, occupied by two Hispanic men, fled the scene immediately after the shooting. One of the suspects was described as having long hair worn in a ponytail. Hours later, police located the Chrysler abandoned, riddled with bullet holes. A search for the two men was launched, with authorities appealing to the public for any information that might lead to their capture.
Despite the initial investigation and the discovery of the suspect's vehicle, the individuals responsible for Jairo Garcia's death have not been publicly identified or apprehended. Law enforcement officials sought information from the community to piece together the events of that fatal day, but as of the latest available information, the case remains unsolved.
