Charleston Vernon Hartfield, a 34-year-old Black male, was tragically killed on October 1, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada. An 11-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, he was off-duty and attending the Route 91 Harvest country music festival with his wife, Veronica. The evening took a horrific turn when a gunman, later identified as Stephen Paddock, opened fire on the concert crowd from a suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
As chaos and
terror erupted among the concertgoers, Hartfield’s instincts as a police officer and military veteran took over. Without hesitation, he began taking action to help and shield others from the barrage of gunfire. It was during these heroic efforts to save lives that Hartfield was fatally struck by a bullet. His friend, Troy Rhett, later recounted sending him a text that night, hoping for a reply and initially thinking he was busy helping others.
Hartfield was a respected figure in his community, known not only for his service on the police force but also as a dedicated youth football coach for the Henderson Cowboys. He was also a published author, having written a book about his experiences as a police officer titled "Memoirs of a Public Servant". A U.S. Army veteran, he served with the 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq and was a sergeant first class in the Nevada Army National Guard at the time of his death.
The perpetrator of the massacre, Stephen Paddock, was found dead by authorities from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his hotel room. The attack resulted in the deaths of 58 people and left hundreds more wounded. No arrests were made in connection with the shooting as Paddock was the sole gunman. Charleston Hartfield was remembered by those who knew him as a man with a "heart of gold" and a "true-blue American" who made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to protect others.
