Charleston Vernon Hartfield, a 34-year-old Black male, was tragically killed on October 1, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada. An 11-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, he was off-duty and attending the Route 91 Harvest country music festival with his wife, Veronica. The evening took a horrific turn when a gunman, later identified as Stephen Paddock, opened fire on the concert crowd from a suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
