On a tragic Tuesday morning, September 6, 2011, Miranda Summerwind McElhiney, a 31-year-old female Sergeant First Class in the Nevada National Guard, was fatally wounded in a senseless act of violence at an IHOP restaurant in Carson City, Nevada. She, along with other members of the National Guard, were gathered for a meeting when a lone gunman opened fire in the establishment. McElhiney was transported from the scene but ultimately succumbed to her injuries later that day.
