Steve Locklear, an 18-year-old Native American male from Hoke County, North Carolina, was tragically killed on the night of December 31, 1994. His death occurred during a violent incident at the Puppy Creek Family Fun Center, where Rodriguez Ferguson, who had reportedly been drinking heavily throughout the day, arrived with the intent to rob Steve Locklear. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in Ferguson fatally shooting Steve Locklear along with three other individuals, and seriously injuring a fifth person.
The violence did not end there. In the early hours of January 1, 1995, Rodriguez Ferguson and his brother Kendrick Ferguson went to the Zodiac Club, where another fatal shooting took place. Rodriguez Ferguson shot and killed James Morrison after a brief confrontation. The spree of violence shocked the Hoke County community and led to a swift investigation by local authorities.
Rodriguez Ferguson was arrested on January 2, 1995, and charged with five counts of first-degree murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. During interrogation, Ferguson waived his Miranda rights and confessed to the shootings, stating that he had “shot them all.” When asked about his motives, Ferguson attributed his actions to being intoxicated, saying, “All I can say is that I was drunk.”
The case proceeded to trial, where Ferguson was found guilty on all charges. His brother Kendrick Ferguson later cooperated with the prosecution and provided testimony about the events surrounding the shootings.
