Eliahana Cruz Torres was one of the 21 victims killed in the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The attack was carried out by an 18-year-old male suspect, Salvador Ramos, who entered the school armed with a semi-automatic rifle and opened fire in two connected classrooms. Ramos had legally purchased the firearms shortly after his 18th birthday. Before arriving at the school, he shot his grandmother in the face, who survived and later alerted authorities.
Law enforcement responded to the scene, but their delayed entry into the classrooms where the shooter was barricaded drew widespread criticism. After more than an hour, a U.S. Border Patrol tactical unit breached the classroom and fatally shot Salvador Ramos. No arrests were made, as the suspect was killed during the police response.
