Danny Raymond Fry, a 42-year-old white male from Florida, was found dead on October 2, 1995, near Seagoville, Texas. His mutilated body—headless and handless—was discovered along the East Fork of the Trinity River in Dallas County. The corpse had been dumped in plain view, not far from a roadway, and was missing all clothing and personal effects. The autopsy revealed signs of heavy drinking and narrowed coronary arteries, but the cause of death was determined to be homicidal violence. The body was initially unidentified and remained so for over three years until genetic testing confirmed it was Fry.
Fry had traveled to Texas in 1995, reportedly for a lucrative opportunity involving associates David Waters and Gary Karr. All three men were later implicated in the disappearance and murder of famed atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair, her son Jon Garth Murray, and granddaughter Robin Murray O’Hair. The trio allegedly conspired to abduct the O’Hair family and steal approximately $600,000 in gold coins. Fry’s role in the scheme appeared to be significant, including impersonating Jon Murray to sell his car and surveilling the victims during their captivity.
According to federal affidavits and witness testimony, tensions escalated between Fry and his accomplices after the O’Hairs were killed and dismembered. Fry was last seen alive on September 30, 1995, at Waters’ apartment in Austin, Texas, appearing ill and withdrawn. Witnesses described him as unusually quiet and disturbed, a stark contrast to his typically animated demeanor. Shortly afterward, Fry vanished. His belongings were left behind, and Waters and Karr returned to the apartment without him, offering vague explanations for his absence.
Investigators believe that Fry was murdered by Waters and Karr to prevent him from revealing details of the O’Hair killings. His torso was found in Dallas County, while his skull and hands were later recovered in Real County, Texas, buried alongside the remains of the O’Hair family. The brutality of Fry’s murder—his body dismembered and dumped—suggested a deliberate effort to obscure his identity and eliminate a potential witness.
David Waters, a convicted felon and former employee of Madalyn Murray O’Hair, pleaded guilty to federal firearms charges and later to conspiracy in the O’Hair case. He led authorities to the burial site in exchange for a reduced sentence and died of cancer in prison in 2003. Gary Karr, also a convicted felon with a history of violent crimes, was convicted in 2000 on multiple federal charges related to the robbery and extortion of the O’Hair family. He was resentenced in 2021 to nearly 50 years in prison. Although both men were strongly implicated in Fry’s murder, neither was formally charged with his death. Nonetheless, Fry’s killing is widely believed to have been a direct consequence of his involvement in the O’Hair abduction and the subsequent fallout among the conspirators.
