On April 15, 1981, the body of 22-year-old Louise Ann Dal Santo, a white female, was discovered in her apartment at the Woodcreek complex in Clarkston, Georgia. She was found lying face down in the bathtub, having been sexually assaulted and strangled by hand. The perpetrator had left her submerged in scalding water. Her brother, Dario Dal Santo, made the grim discovery.
The nature of Louise's death immediately raised alarms for investigators as it bore a striking resemblance to other
recent crimes in the Atlanta area. This led to the suspicion that a serial offender was at large. The investigation intensified when two other young women, 22-year-old Giselle Yvonne Clardy and 22-year-old Patricia Berry, were found murdered in a similar manner in May and June of the same year. Both had also been sexually assaulted, strangled, and left in their bathtubs.
As law enforcement delved deeper, they uncovered reports from other women who had survived attacks by a man employing various ruses to gain entry into their apartments. One woman reported a man posing as a maintenance worker strangled her into unconsciousness, while another recounted an attempted forced entry by a man dressed as a floral delivery person. These accounts, along with other witness statements, helped authorities to create a composite sketch of the suspect.
The investigation led to a significant breakthrough on July 14, 1981, with the arrest of 32-year-old James Samuel Walraven of Decatur, Georgia. Walraven, who was unemployed and frequently seen at local public tennis courts, was identified by witnesses and surviving victims. During his interrogation, he made unsettling statements, and while in jail, he allegedly confessed to another inmate, stating he had “killed those goddamn bitches.”
James Samuel Walraven was tried in November 1981 and initially sentenced to death. However, his conviction was overturned due to legal issues concerning the admissibility of his jailhouse confession, leading to a retrial. In 1983, he was resentenced to life in prison. Although no physical evidence directly tied him to the murders, the witness testimonies were compelling. Walraven remained incarcerated until May 2004, when he died by suicide in prison by hanging himself with a torn bedsheet. He remains the primary suspect in the deaths of Louise Dal Santo, Giselle Clardy, and Patricia Berry.
