On June 7, 2020, Patricia Loeza, a 26-year-old Latino female, was found dead in Rancho Dominguez, California. Her body was discovered on a dirt embankment east of the Compton Creek bed, north of Del Amo Boulevard, just after midnight. She had sustained multiple stab wounds to her upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. Patricia Loeza was believed to be experiencing homelessness and may have been living in an encampment near the creek bed at the time of her death.
Her murder was
part of a disturbing pattern that unfolded over several months in the same area. Two other individuals—Kenneth Jones, a 26-year-old male, and Cesar Mazariegos, a 30-year-old male—were also found dead in the vicinity, both having suffered similar violent injuries. Jones was discovered on January 15, 2021, with stab wounds and blunt force trauma, while Mazariegos was found on February 9, 2021, rolled up in a carpet and beaten and stabbed.
Authorities arrested Tracy Walker, a 56-year-old African-American male, on February 11, 2021, in connection with all three murders. Walker, who was himself homeless and living in an encampment near Compton Creek, was charged with three counts of murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He later pleaded guilty to all three murders and admitted to a prior strike for voluntary manslaughter dating back to 1993. In October 2021, Walker was sentenced to 110 years to life in state prison.
During the court proceedings, family members of the victims shared emotional tributes and expressed their grief. Patricia Loeza’s mother, Julia Escudero, tearfully asked the defendant why he had killed her daughter, while her sister Jasmin described Patricia as a loving and caring person who was more than her circumstances. The sentencing brought some closure to the families, though the pain of their loss remained deeply felt.
