On April 9, 1975, 17-year-old white female Arietta Marie “Renie” Tinker was dropped off by her husband at the Hippopotamus Lounge on Hollywood Beach in Hollywood, Florida. That would be the last time she was seen alive. Three days later, her body was discovered floating in the Snake Creek Canal, approximately half a mile east of U.S. Route 27 in Miramar, Florida. Although there were no immediate signs of foul play, investigators suspected that the 17-year-old white female had been murdered.
The cause of death was believed to be drowning.
Arietta Marie Tinker’s death was ultimately linked to a series of unsolved homicides known as the Flat-Tire Murders, which plagued Broward and Miami-Dade Counties between early 1975 and early 1976. These crimes were named after a tactic believed to have been used by the perpetrator—deflating victims’ tires to lure them into vulnerable situations. The victims, mostly young white females, were often found in or near canals, and many had been beaten, sexually assaulted, or stripped before being discarded.
The suspected killer was described as a white male in his early twenties, physically fit, well-dressed, and possibly married. He was believed to be highly intelligent and a sexual sadist who used charm to gain the trust of his victims. Despite extensive investigations and a reward offered for information, no arrests were ever made in connection with the murder of 17-year-old white female Arietta Marie Tinker or the other Flat-Tire victims. Her case remains unsolved, part of a chilling chapter in Florida’s criminal history.
