Seventeen-year-old Annette Edwards, a female high-school student from the Anderson area of Shasta County, vanished on the night of August 21, 1978. Online case archives report that she was abducted, raped, and then pushed from a bridge outside Anderson, California, suffering fatal injuries on impact. Publicly available records do not specify her ethnicity, so it remains officially “unspecified.”
Investigators later reconstructed that the 17-year-old female victim was beaten about the face with extreme force before the fall. When her body was recovered, an autopsy documented twin fractures that split her upper jaw and drove bone shards through the eye sockets into her brain, causing basal skull fractures that proved fatal. The position of her clothing and other physical evidence indicated a violent sexual assault immediately preceding the homicide.
Edwards's remains were found three days after she went missing, down a steep embankment roughly two miles from her residence. Shasta County detectives linked the crime scene to a series of assaults then terrorising young women in Redding and Anderson. Contemporaneous press accounts noted that the 17-year-old female had last been seen walking toward a local fireworks area shortly before disappearing.
Attention soon focused on 23-year-old Cottonwood mechanic Darrell Keith Rich after he “discovered” two other victims' bodies and failed a polygraph. Over the next 48 hours Rich told friends he had been paid to kill one woman, prompting multiple witness tips. Detectives arrested him late on the night of August 23. During taped interviews he confessed to killing Annette Edwards and three other females, and he personally led officers to the murder weapon and other evidence. No additional suspects were ever developed.
Rich was transferred to Yolo County for trial because of intense local publicity. In January 1981 a jury convicted him of four counts of first-degree murder—including the murder of 17-year-old female Annette Edwards of unspecified ethnicity—and 15 related sex-crime counts. The panel found multiple-murder and felony-murder special circumstances and returned a death verdict, which was upheld on direct appeal in 1988.
After nearly 19 years on California's death row, Rich was executed by lethal injection at San Quentin on March 15 2000. He offered the word “Peace” as his last statement. Edwards's case remains closed: the only person ever arrested, charged, or convicted in her death was Darrell Keith Rich.
