Anthony Gianuzzi, a 21-year-old male, was tragically murdered on May 5, 1990, in Rubidoux, California. His body was discovered along a dirt power line access road near the intersection of Canal and Alta streets. Gianuzzi had been missing for nearly two days before a jogger stumbled upon the crime scene. He was found alongside his girlfriend, Stacey Siegrist, a 19-year-old female, who was also murdered.
Both victims had been shot twice—once in the side of the head and once in the back of the neck. Siegrist had also been sexually assaulted.
Investigators later linked the double homicide to Alfredo Rolando Prieto, a convicted serial killer and rapist. Prieto, who was already on California's death row, had been sentenced to death for a separate murder in Virginia. In 2010, Riverside County's cold case unit submitted evidence from the crime scene to a private laboratory, which confirmed Prieto’s DNA was present. Authorities delayed publicly announcing the findings to avoid influencing jurors during Prieto’s Virginia trial.
Prieto had a long history of violent crimes, including at least nine murders and four sexual assaults. He was previously convicted for the 1992 murder and rape of 15-year-old Yvette Woodruff in Ontario, California. Additionally, preliminary DNA tests implicated him in three 1988 Virginia slayings, leading to his extradition from California to face trial for two of those murders. Investigators believe Prieto may have had one or two accomplices in the Rubidoux murders, though no additional suspects have been formally charged.
Authorities urged anyone with information regarding the case to contact the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Despite Prieto’s conviction for other crimes, charges related to Gianuzzi and Siegrist’s murders had not been officially filed at the time of the investigation. The case remains a chilling example of a brutal crime that took decades to solve through forensic advancements.
