Jennie Vincow, a 79-year-old Caucasian woman, was brutally murdered in her Los Angeles apartment on June 28, 1984. The crime was particularly gruesome, as her throat was slashed so deeply that she was nearly decapitated. She had also suffered multiple stab wounds to her chest and neck. The scene indicated signs of forced entry, with a window screen removed and the apartment ransacked.
Investigators later determined that she had likely been sexually assaulted post-mortem.
The suspect in the case was Richard Ramirez, later infamously known as the "Night Stalker." Ramirez, a serial killer who terrorized California in the mid-1980s, was linked to Vincow’s murder through fingerprint evidence found at the crime scene. At the time, authorities did not yet know they were dealing with a serial killer, but Vincow’s murder would later be recognized as the first in Ramirez’s horrifying spree.
Ramirez continued his violent attacks for over a year, targeting men and women of various ages, often breaking into homes at night. His crimes included murder, sexual assault, and burglary. He was eventually arrested in August 1985 after a failed car theft attempt led to a chase and capture by civilians. His trial, which lasted several years, resulted in a conviction for 13 murders, including that of Jennie Vincow. He was sentenced to death in 1989 and remained on death row until his death in 2013.
