Samantha Winters, a 48-year-old white woman, was found dead on June 6, 2007, at a truck stop in Lebanon, Tennessee. Her body was discovered naked and discarded in a trash can, having suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The brutal nature of her death and the location where her body was found bore striking similarities to other unsolved murders across multiple states, prompting investigators to consider the possibility of a serial killer at large.
The investigation led authorities to Bruce Mendenhall, a 56-year-old long-haul truck driver from Albion, Illinois. Mendenhall was arrested in July 2007 at a truck stop in Nashville, Tennessee, in connection with the murder of Sara Hulbert, a 25-year-old white woman whose body was found at the same location a few weeks prior. A search of Mendenhall's truck revealed a disturbing array of evidence, including blood from multiple victims, a rifle, tape, gloves, handcuffs, and other items. DNA evidence linked him to several other victims, including Samantha Winters.
In 2018, Mendenhall was convicted in Wilson County, Tennessee, for the first-degree murder of Samantha Winters. He received a life sentence for the murder, along with a two-year term for abuse of a corpse. Prior to this, he had already been serving a life sentence for the murder of Sara Hulbert. Mendenhall was also implicated in the deaths of other women, including Carma Purpura and Lucille Carter, with cases spanning across Indiana, Alabama, and other states. Despite the mounting evidence, Mendenhall has consistently denied involvement in any of the murders.
Currently, Bruce Mendenhall is incarcerated at the Turney Center Industrial Complex in Only, Tennessee. He is serving multiple life sentences for his crimes. Investigators continue to explore the extent of his involvement in other unsolved cases, as he remains a suspect in several additional murders across the country.
