In the fall of 2014, a tragic story unfolded in Las Vegas involving the death of 41-year-old Hispanic female, Julia Garcia. Her body was discovered on November 15, 2014, by volunteers who were searching for another missing person. Julia's remains were found wrapped in plastic table covers and trash bags in a desert embankment near State Route 147 and Pabco Road.
An autopsy later revealed that the cause of death was strangulation, and the case was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Julia's death would stretch on for more than two years before a significant breakthrough occurred. In February 2017, Las Vegas Metro Police announced the arrests of three teenagers in connection with the cold case murder. The suspects were identified as Julia's then-18-year-old daughter, Brenda Garcia, her 19-year-old boyfriend, Joseph Sanchez, and their 19-year-old neighbor, Michael Trieb. The arrests came after a painstaking investigation that involved the analysis of phone and Facebook records, as well as a forensic examination of computers. A crucial piece of evidence was the match between trash bags found in the Garcia home and those used to wrap Julia's body.
Following the arrests, the disturbing details of the alleged murder plot came to light. According to police reports, Brenda Garcia confessed to recruiting Sanchez and Trieb to kill her mother. The motive, she claimed, was to get out of a gang, with the murder supposedly being part of Sanchez's gang initiation. The plan was reportedly conceived the night before the slaying on November 5, 2014. On the morning of the murder, Brenda allegedly let Sanchez and Trieb into the family home, where they hid and waited for her mother to be alone.
The attack occurred in the kitchen of the family's home. One of the teens allegedly struck Julia with a metal pipe before Sanchez stabbed her. When she fought back, Sanchez reportedly strangled her while Trieb held her feet. After Julia was killed, the three teenagers are said to have wrapped her body and loaded it into the trunk of her own car. They then drove to a desert area to dispose of the remains. It was also reported that Sanchez and Trieb stole money and jewelry from Julia, and Brenda paid them each $50. In an attempt to cover up the crime, Brenda allegedly told her father, who reported his wife missing the next day, that she had found an email from her mother stating she was leaving. The three suspects were subsequently charged with murder with a deadly weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit murder.
