In a tragic turn of events on the evening of March 2, 2025, a designated safe exchange zone became the scene of a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 31-year-old Jeffrey Alan Catron, a male from Bedford County, Virginia. The incident unfolded in the rear parking lot of the Vinton Municipal Building, a location established to ensure the safety of individuals during custody exchanges.
Catron, along with his friend, 29-year-old Brian Christian Sledd, was shot and killed during what was supposed to be a routine drop-off of children.
The alleged shooter, 45-year-old Jordan Daniel Pierce of Salem, was the ex-husband of Catron's fiancée. Pierce was at the location to drop off the three children he shared with his ex-wife. An altercation reportedly escalated, leading Pierce to fire approximately 13 rounds. The attack was witnessed by the children's mother, her three sons, and two Roanoke County firefighters who were in the vicinity. Both Catron and Sledd were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.
Law enforcement officers who responded to the disturbance found Pierce still at the location and took him into custody without incident. He was subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Pierce is currently being held without bond at the Roanoke County Jail. This was not the first instance of conflict between Pierce and Catron; court records show that in February 2022, Pierce had pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of attempted assault and battery against Catron, for which he received a suspended sentence. The investigation into the double homicide is ongoing.
