In the summer of 2009 in Las Vegas, a debt of $10,000 owed to the wrong people culminated in the violent end of Wen Jun Li, a male of Asian descent. His life was brutally cut short inside a karaoke bar several blocks west of the Las Vegas Strip. The establishment, known as Forbes KTV, became a scene of terror as a hit man, dressed in black, carried out a merciless attack. Li was slashed and stabbed 32 times in a frantic and futile attempt to escape his assailant.
The ruthless efficiency of the killer pointed to a professional execution, later attributed to an enforcer for a notorious Taiwan-based gang, United Bamboo.
The man responsible for Li's death was identified as Xiao Ye Bai, a martial arts-trained assassin. On the night of the murder, Bai was driven to the karaoke bar by his then-girlfriend, Pei "Nikki" Pei. To conceal their identities, the license plate of their black Honda Accord was covered. Once inside, the grim scene unfolded quickly. Upon spotting Bai, Li attempted to use another man, Jian Guo, as a shield by pushing him towards the approaching killer. Guo sustained a cut to his arm before Bai relentlessly pursued Li down a hallway, where the fatal stabbing occurred. A woman in the bar, Lin Yao, was also injured, stabbed four times as she tried to intervene, mistakenly believing Bai was only punching Li.
The investigation into the savage killing led to the arrest of Xiao Ye Bai. During his trial, prosecutors painted a chilling portrait of him as a sociopath and a hired killer for an international organized crime group. He was ultimately convicted of capital murder. While the jury spared him the death penalty, a judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole for Li's murder, with an additional sentence of 32 to 85 years for other felony charges, including kidnapping, extortion, and conspiracy to commit murder. At his sentencing, Bai offered a tearful apology through a Mandarin interpreter, expressing remorse for his actions. His accomplice and girlfriend at the time, Pei "Nikki" Pei, pleaded guilty to reduced felony charges of accessory to murder for her role in driving Bai to and from the crime scene. She testified against him and received a sentence of two years' probation.
