On the evening of January 18, 2017, the life of 33-year-old Myron Manghum, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a Las Vegas apartment. What began as an argument over drugs escalated into a violent double homicide that also claimed the life of 27-year-old Alyssa Velasco. A third individual was wounded in the altercation but managed to escape the apartment, leaving a trail of blood that would later guide police to the scene of the crime.
Police were first alerted to the situation by
reports of a man who had been shot. This surviving victim, who had sustained gunshot wounds to his hands, had fled the apartment located on the 900 block of West Washington Avenue. Following the blood trail, officers arrived at the residence to discover the bodies of Manghum and Velasco. The Clark County coroner's office would later confirm that Manghum died from a gunshot wound to the head, while Velasco succumbed to gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
The subsequent investigation into the double homicide led to the identification of suspects. One man, 31-year-old Durwin Allen, was arrested in connection with the killings. The surviving victim identified Allen as the individual who shot both him and Manghum. Further investigation revealed that two men had been allowed into the apartment, which neighbors indicated was known for narcotics sales, before the argument and fatal shootings occurred. Allen was subsequently charged with two counts of murder with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted murder with a deadly weapon, and battery with a deadly weapon.
