Shakeem Latif Peterson-Brock, a 29-year-old African American man, was fatally shot in Greensboro, North Carolina, on January 1, 2025. The incident occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day, around 1:13 a.m., in the 2600 block of Lawndale Drive. Greensboro Police responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Peterson-Brock suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was immediately transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting took place outside Aunt E’s Southern Cuisine and its event space, The E Center, in the parking lot of Kirkwood Commons shopping center. Peterson-Brock had attended a private party at the venue with his fiancée before the tragic event unfolded. The party was hosted by a first-time promoter and had over 20 armed security guards inside. However, the shooting occurred outside the venue, and there were no reported disturbances during the event itself.
A second victim, a woman, was also wounded in the shooting. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not released her identity but confirmed that she is expected to recover. Witnesses described the chaos that erupted when shots were fired, with one local rapper recounting how his car was struck by bullets during the incident.
As of now, Greensboro Police have not disclosed any information regarding a suspect or motive in the case. Investigators are actively pursuing leads and attempting to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The incident marks the first homicide of 2025 in Greensboro.
