On a summer evening in Las Vegas, the life of David Helmer, a 44-year-old Caucasian male, came to an unexpected and tragic end. On August 20, 2016, what began as an altercation spiraled into a situation with fatal consequences. Responding to a report of a battery at an apartment complex on Greene Lane, near the intersection of Hacienda Avenue and Maryland Parkway, police officers discovered Helmer with injuries.
He was promptly transported to Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center for
treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Helmer was pronounced dead. The initial circumstances of his death, following a physical fight, led the Metropolitan Police Department to investigate the case as a homicide. Detectives on the scene, however, noted a discrepancy; the physical trauma Helmer had sustained did not appear severe enough to be fatal. The official cause of death was ruled to be dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that affects the heart's ability to pump blood. The coroner's report also listed methamphetamine intoxication and the psychological stress from the altercation as significant contributing factors. Based on these findings, the manner of death was officially classified as an accident. Consequently, the man who had been in the fight with Helmer was not arrested, and the case that began as a homicide investigation was closed.
