Brianye Danielle Copeland was a 27-year-old Black woman whose loved ones described her as ambitious, graceful, and deeply caring. A talented athlete, she had pursued a passion for basketball that earned her opportunities to play at the collegiate level for Central State University in Ohio. Her life was cut short on the morning of February 7, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Just before 10 a.m., she was found in her vehicle in the parking lot of the Ella B.
Scarborough Community Resource Center on Stitt Road, having been shot multiple times. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
The sudden loss devastated Brianye’s family and friends. Her father recalled how she had written down numerous goals she planned to accomplish, while her cousin described her as a sweet and kind-hearted person who never engaged in conflict. Those who knew her remembered her infectious smile and upbeat personality. In the days after her death, loved ones gathered in the rain to mourn and release balloons in her memory.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department investigated the killing as a homicide and quickly identified a suspect. Kristopher Anthony Sinclair, 38, was located at an apartment complex near the crime scene with the help of witnesses and surveillance footage. He was taken into custody by the department’s Juvenile Accountability and Diversion Empowerment team.
According to court documents, the investigation uncovered a backpack in a wooded area containing Sinclair’s driver’s license and a handwritten note. The note included the statements, “I will not harm anyone else” and “When cops show up, I’m going to. .. hell.” The affidavit did not specify when or where the note was written. Sinclair was initially charged with first-degree murder and was denied bond during his court appearance.
On September 8, 2026, Kristopher Anthony Sinclair pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the death of Brianye Copeland. He was sentenced to prison, bringing a legal conclusion to the case. The case is considered closed as of September 2026.
