On the evening of March 2, 2025, 48-year-old Hispanic male Ottoniel Lopez-Diaz was fatally shot in Durham, North Carolina. Shortly before 10:00 p.m., officers responded to reports of a disturbance involving a weapon in the 300 block of East Umstead Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Ottoniel Lopez-Diaz suffering from a gunshot wound and another man who had been struck in the head with a pistol.
Both victims were transported to a local hospital, where Ottoniel Lopez-Diaz later succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation, four men were arrested in connection with the incident. The suspects, all from outside Durham, were identified as D'Mario Person, 21, of Henderson; Jeremy Rollins, 20, of Henderson; Robert Dockery, 20, of Henderson; and Rahkeim Perry, 21, of Franklinton. Each was charged with murder, two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of felony conspiracy. All four are currently being held in the Durham County Jail.
Ottoniel Lopez-Diaz, born on January 22, 1977, was remembered by his community following his tragic death. A funeral service was held on March 8, 2025, at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home in Durham.
