On April 7, 2025, 35-year-old Hispanic woman Aurora Rosendo-Ortega was tragically killed in a domestic violence incident at her home on Bowman Drive in Castle Hayne, North Carolina. Her ex-partner, Avelino Jaimes-Acuna, forcibly entered the residence and fatally shot her. During the attack, Aurora's 18-year-old son, Santiago Pacheco Rosendo, was also shot while attempting to protect his mother; he survived his injuries. After the shooting, Jaimes-Acuna turned the firearm on himself and later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
This incident was confirmed by the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office as a murder-suicide linked to domestic violence. Jaimes-Acuna had a documented history of violent behavior, including a 2021 arrest for assaulting a woman and making threats. The community has been deeply affected by this loss, as Aurora was known for her dedication to her family and her warm presence.
In the aftermath, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to assist with funeral expenses and provide support for Aurora's three children. The fundraiser has garnered significant community support, reflecting the impact Aurora had on those around her.
