Edgar Contreras, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, was shot during the predawn hours of February 16, 2017, after a confrontation between occupants of two vehicles near Stewart Place Park in the northeast Las Vegas Valley. Police were called around 3:30 a.m. to the 3400 block of Marquette Drive, near Pecos and Gowan. Investigators later said the dispute began as a verbal altercation in the area of Teakwood and Montello avenues, escalated when a gun was drawn, and ended with a single round striking
Contreras in the neck. He first arrived at North Vista Hospital and was transferred to UMC's trauma center in critical condition.
Despite days of treatment, homicide detectives were notified on Sunday, February 26, 2017, that Contreras had died from his wound, and the Clark County coroner ruled the death a homicide caused by a gunshot to the neck. The case was described by local authorities as stemming from an apparent road-rage encounter, with the clash moving from the park area to Marquette Drive before the shooting.
In the immediate aftermath, Las Vegas police reported no suspect identified and no motive established, and they issued public appeals for tips through the homicide section and Crime Stoppers.
