On Monday, April 14, 2025, at approximately 6:30 PM, a tragic incident unfolded at the intersection of Gate No. 2 Road and the Interstate 85 Northbound off-ramp in Butner, North Carolina. What initially began as a road rage incident on I-85 culminated in the death of 63-year-old Broderick Hines of Durham. Butner Public Safety Officers responded to what was first reported as a single-car crash, but while en route, they were informed that a shooting had occurred at the scene.
Upon arrival,
officers discovered Hines suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to Duke University Medical Center by Granville EMS, where he was later pronounced dead. According to witness accounts, an orange Jeep Wrangler with two occupants pulled up alongside Hines' vehicle and fired into the passenger side, striking him.
The investigation, which included assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation led to the swift arrest of two suspects from Henderson: Travis Randall Jones and Maquita Blue. Both individuals were charged with first-degree murder and firing into an occupied vehicle. The suspects were taken into custody with the assistance of the Vance County Sheriff's Office and subsequently held without bond at the Granville County Detention Center.
