In a tragic turn of events on a Wednesday afternoon in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, a family argument escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 41-year-old Joseph Falciani. The incident, which occurred on February 12, 2025, inside a residence on East Cresse Avenue, led to the arrest of his 63-year-old stepfather, Carmine Neri.
The dispute reportedly began over a seemingly minor issue: the victim's 10-year-old son leaving his wet pants on a banister. This sparked a heated exchange between Falciani and Neri. The argument moved to the second floor of the home, where Neri allegedly went into his office and locked the door. Falciani is said to have kicked the door in, at which point Neri fired a single gunshot.
Police were called to the scene around 3:45 p.m. for a report of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, they were met by the 911 caller who indicated the shooter was still inside.
Officers found Neri in the living room with a handgun in his back pocket and took him into custody. Falciani was discovered at the top of the staircase with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses, including two other individuals present in the house, recounted hearing the argument escalate before the fatal shot was fired. They found Falciani lying on the landing as Neri held a firearm. Investigators recovered a spent shell casing and a projectile from the scene. The office door showed signs of being forcibly kicked in.
Carmine Neri was arrested and charged with murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings. His attorney has claimed self-defense, stating that Falciani was the aggressor. Prosecutors, however, have noted that Falciani was unarmed.
