On February 10, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Silver Springs, Nevada, resulting in the deaths of 3-year-old Gertrude Lynette Baggett and her mother, 38-year-old Haylie Baggett. Gertrude, a white female child, was born on December 3, 2021, to parents Ben and Haylie Baggett. Known affectionately as 'Gerti,' she was remembered for her vibrant personality, love for music, dancing, and a penchant for collecting rocks. Her premature birth did not hinder her spirited nature, and she brought joy to all who knew her.
On the evening of the incident, around 5:00 p.m., the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic violence call at the Baggett residence on Spring Circle Drive. Upon arrival, deputies learned that Haylie had barricaded herself in a bedroom with Gertrude. Despite attempts to communicate and de-escalate the situation, Haylie did not respond. Fearing for the child's safety, deputies forced entry into the room. Unbeknownst to them, Haylie was armed with a handgun. As deputies entered, she fatally shot Gertrude before turning the weapon on herself.
Emergency services, including the Central Lyon County Fire Department and Care Flight, were dispatched immediately. Gertrude was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno but was later pronounced deceased. Haylie was declared dead at the scene. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office, along with the Nevada State Police, conducted an investigation into the incident, which was classified as a murder-suicide.
A GoFundMe campaign was established to support Gertrude's father, Ben Baggett, in covering funeral expenses and counseling services as he navigates the aftermath of this profound loss.
