Kellie Barnett, a 50-year-old woman from New Lenox, Illinois, tragically lost her life on Christmas morning, December 25, 2024, in Schaumburg, Illinois. She was fatally shot by her brother-in-law, Daniel Garcia, 52, who mistook her for an intruder inside his home. Barnett had been staying overnight with relatives for the holiday when the incident occurred.
Authorities responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 7:20 a.m. at a residence on Carlisle Court.
Upon arrival, officers found Barnett suffering from a gunshot wound to her torso. She was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Investigators determined that Garcia, a homeowner, had mistaken Barnett for an intruder and fired his Glock 9mm handgun, which was later recovered at the scene.
Garcia was taken into custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors revealed that Garcia admitted to the shooting during a 911 call, providing details about the firearm and its location. Court documents indicate that Barnett had been staying in a guest bedroom, but was shot inside Garcia and his wife’s bedroom. Garcia later told police that he kept his handgun in a holster beside his bed and had forgotten that Barnett was staying in the home.
Following his arrest, Garcia appeared in court, where he was ordered to remain detained until his next hearing, scheduled for January 17, 2025, in Rolling Meadows. If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from three to fourteen years in prison. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Barnett’s death a homicide, citing a gunshot wound to the chest as the cause.
