Harless, a hardworking man employed by Winterwood, Inc., was at his residence at 511 Vanzant Road when officers from the London Police Department arrived to execute a search warrant. The warrant, however, was intended for a different address, 489 Vanzant Road, located just 250 feet away, in connection with the theft of a weed eater and a heater.
The chain of events leading to the fatal encounter began with the arrest of Hobert Buttery for the theft of the items from a property owned by the Laurel County Judge-Executive. Buttery informed police that he had taken the weed eater to a house in Lily, which led to the attempt to serve the search warrant. Upon entering the home, police stated that Harless was armed with a handgun and raised it, prompting an officer to fire multiple rounds from a patrol rifle, fatally wounding him.
