Kamel Carpenter, a 20-year-old Black male from Berkeley, California, was fatally shot on January 10, 2025, in Oakland. The incident occurred at a community event center on the 500 block of 55th Street, where Carpenter and two other individuals arrived for a gathering. Before they could enter, multiple gunmen opened fire, striking Carpenter and another victim, 19-year-old Kelin Sissoko of Richmond.
Both young men succumbed to their injuries, while a third victim, a 29-year-old man from San Pablo, was wounded but survived.
Authorities are investigating whether the shooting was connected to an ongoing rivalry between groups in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Although police recovered a firearm at the scene, it remains unclear whether it was used in the attack. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the suspects fled before law enforcement arrived.
Carpenter had prior encounters with law enforcement. Records indicate that he was arrested in Alameda County on April 17, 2024, for discharging a firearm in a negligent manner and carrying a loaded firearm in public. Additionally, he had previous arrests for various offenses, including resisting a peace officer, exhibiting a deadly weapon, and robbery. His criminal history spanned multiple jurisdictions, including Contra Costa County, San Pablo, Los Angeles, and Solano County.
Despite his past legal troubles, Carpenter's death remains a tragic event, and authorities continue to seek leads on the perpetrators responsible for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement working to determine the motive behind the attack and identify those involved.
