In the quiet mountains of Hiawassee, Georgia, a tragic and perplexing story unfolded in early March 2025. On the morning of March 8th, hikers on Bell Mountain made a grim discovery that would leave a family searching for answers and a community in shock. They found the bodies of 19-year-old twin brothers, Qaadir Malik Lewis and his brother, Naazir Rahim Lewis, both of whom had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The brothers were from Lawrenceville, a considerable distance from the remote mountain where their lives ended.
The initial investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation pointed towards a murder-suicide. This preliminary conclusion, however, was immediately and vehemently disputed by the twins' family. They described Qaadir and Naazir as inseparable and deeply loving towards one another, making the idea that one would harm the other inconceivable to them. The family highlighted that the brothers had no known connection to Hiawassee or Bell Mountain and were, in fact, supposed to be on a flight to Boston for their clothing line business the day before they were found. Their plane tickets were discovered with their belongings at the scene.
As the investigation progressed, further details emerged. In May 2025, the GBI officially concluded their investigation, ruling the deaths a double suicide. They cited evidence such as cell phone location data showing the brothers traveled alone from their home to Bell Mountain. Internet search history on their phones reportedly included terms related to suicide and how to load a gun. The GBI also stated that forensic evidence indicated both brothers had fired a gun. A 1911-style. 45 caliber handgun, which was later found to have been stolen, was discovered at the scene between Naazir's legs. A backpack belonging to Qaadir contained a notebook with the words 'Journey to the Afterlife.'
Despite the official ruling, the family of Qaadir Malik Lewis remained unconvinced, believing the scene was staged. They pointed to the positioning of the bodies and the gun as suspicious. The family's attorney publicly questioned the GBI's conclusion, and the family has continued to advocate for a more thorough and independent investigation into the deaths of the two young men. Adding another layer to the case, a volunteer firefighter was arrested and charged with misdemeanor obstruction for taking and publicly sharing photos of the death scene, although he was not implicated in their deaths. The conflicting narratives of a tragic suicide pact and a potential double homicide have left a cloud of uncertainty over the final moments of Qaadir and Naazir Lewis.
