Jonathan Isaiah Johnson, a 19-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of March 1, 2025, in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Authorities responded to reports of an armed individual near Southwest 14th Street. While investigating, deputies heard a gunshot and soon discovered Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound a few blocks away. He was transported to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced deceased.
Following the shooting, law enforcement launched an extensive search for the
suspect. A Broward Sheriff's Office helicopter spotted 19-year-old Kenneth Philpart Jr. in his underwear holding a firearm near Southwest Sixth Terrace. Philpart Jr. attempted to evade authorities but was later found hiding in a trash can. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for medical clearance.
Philpart Jr. claimed that the shooting was an act of self-defense. However, he was charged with multiple offenses, including possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent, possession of fentanyl with intent to sell, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, improper exhibition of a firearm, and resisting an officer without violence. Authorities stated that the case would be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine if homicide charges would be filed.
Investigators from the Broward Sheriff's Homicide Unit, along with specialized teams such as K-9, Aviation, and the Threat Intervention Tactics Analytics Network played a crucial role in tracking down and apprehending Philpart Jr. The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of Johnson.
