Barry Dewayne Averett III, 28, a Black man, was shot in the early hours of Wednesday, August 15, 2012, near 39th and Burdette Streets in Omaha. Officers responding to gunfire found him wounded in the street; he was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His family later shared remembrances in an obituary noting his age and the date of his death, the same day police recorded the homicide.
