On a Sunday afternoon in Alma, Georgia, the life of 50-year-old Antonious Brinson, an African American man, was tragically cut short. On May 11, 2025, a vehicle drove by a residence on the 200 block of East 6th Street and multiple gunshots were fired toward the house. Brinson was struck by the gunfire. Emergency services were called to the scene around 4:30 p.m., and he was quickly transported to Bacon County Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his wounds and passed away.
The Alma Police Department requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to lead the death investigation, with support from the Bacon County Sheriff's Office. Through witness statements and evidence collected at the scene, investigators were able to identify a suspect. Later that same evening, law enforcement located 34-year-old Anthony Dwayne Johnson at a local motel, where he was taken into custody without incident. Johnson, a resident of Alma, was subsequently booked into the Bacon County Jail.
Following the investigation, Anthony Dwayne Johnson was charged with Felony Murder, two counts of Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm during a crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a convicted felon. Antonious Brinson's body was sent to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office in Pooler for an autopsy. The Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office is set to prosecute the case. Authorities have encouraged anyone with additional information regarding the shooting to come forward.
