In the quiet town of Alma, Georgia, the evening of October 15, 2018, was shattered by the sound of gunfire. In the vicinity of 504 E. 8th Street, a neighbor's report of shots fired sent Alma police officers rushing to the scene. There they discovered 24-year-old Sabron Markez Mosby, a male resident of the community, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Bacon County Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to assist the local authorities in the ensuing homicide investigation.
The investigation into Mosby's death led to the arrests of four individuals. An extensive inquiry by the GBI Douglas Regional office, the Alma Police Department, and the Bacon County Sheriff's Office identified Glenn Smith, Cleavonta Jerrideau, Deangelo Morgan, and Paizsa Murchinson as suspects. At the time the warrants were issued, Smith and Jerrideau were already in custody on unrelated charges. Morgan and Murchinson were arrested and taken to the Bacon County Jail. The investigation also led to additional charges for Jerrideau in the neighboring Pierce County.
The legal proceedings that followed saw the paths of the accused diverge significantly. Deangelo Deshawn Morgan was ultimately convicted for the malice murder of Sabron Mosby in 2023. He was also found guilty of the aggravated assault of another individual, Donoven King. For the murder, Morgan was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, with an additional twenty years for the aggravated assault. In a separate trial, his co-defendants, Cleavanta Jerrideau and Glenn Darius Smith, were acquitted of the charges against them. Morgan later appealed his conviction, arguing that the court had erred by excluding certain evidence and that his trial counsel had been ineffective. However, the Supreme Court of Georgia affirmed the trial court's decision, upholding his conviction and sentence.
