Barbara "Bobbie" Brandt, an 81-year-old Caucasian female, had been a resident at Apple Rehab in Cromwell, Connecticut, since 2021. Neighbors from the condo she once shared with her husband, Dennis "Danny" Brandt, remembered her as a sweet woman who loved baked goods, potato chips, and was an avid reader. Until she moved to the nursing facility, she was considered the head of the household.
Fridays were once the day Dennis Brandt would take his disabled wife out for breakfast.
After she moved into Apple Rehab, he continued to visit her regularly. On Friday, October 4, 2024, the 82-year-old drove the roughly two miles from their shared condo to the facility. He entered his wife's room, where she was alone without a roommate, and shot her three times, killing her, before turning the gun on himself. The shooting occurred around 11 a.m., and staff immediately called 911 and placed the facility on lockdown.
The incident was identified by police as a murder-suicide. Dennis Brandt was the sole suspect in the death of his wife, and as he died at the scene, no arrests were made. An autopsy later confirmed that Barbara Brandt's death was a homicide caused by gunshot wounds to the head, neck, and torso. Dennis Brandt's death was ruled a suicide from a single gunshot wound to the head. The motive for the tragic event remains unknown to officials at the rehabilitation center, who noted there had been no known previous threats. The couple, who had lived in the same condo complex for about 50 years, were said to have loved their cats as if they were their children. After the incident, animal control took custody of their two remaining cats.
