In the autumn of 1986, a young Black/African American woman named Wydeane Ellerbee, aged 26, vanished from Tuskegee, Alabama. She was last seen on September 12, 1986, a day when a friend noted she was wearing a pair of black pants. As days turned into weeks with no sign of her, concern grew, and a missing person report was filed. Weeks later, her car was discovered abandoned in Tuskegee, adding a somber note to her mysterious disappearance. For seven long months, her whereabouts remained unknown, leaving her family and community to grapple with the uncertainty of her fate.
The break in the case came from an entirely different investigation in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, in April of 1987. A deputy there was looking into a kidnapping complaint made by a man named Jerry Marcus, who was also connected to a separate missing person case. During this investigation, information surfaced that linked Marcus to Wydeane Ellerbee's disappearance. When questioned, and after being advised of his rights, Marcus made a startling confession. He admitted to killing Wydeane and even drew a map for the authorities, pinpointing the exact location of her body.
Following the map provided by Marcus, investigators were led to a house in Tuskegee belonging to his mother, Ruth Marcus. Behind the house, they unearthed a shallow grave. The human remains found within were badly decomposed, but they were a crucial step toward uncovering the truth. Near the grave, a pair of black pants was discovered, which were later identified by Wydeane's friend as the same ones she was wearing on the day she was last seen. Medical examiners determined that the remains were those of a Black female and that the cause of death was asphyxial strangulation. Further confirmation of the victim's identity came from dental records. A dentist who had treated Wydeane since 1980 was able to positively identify a temporary filling in the skull as his work, solidifying that the long search for Wydeane Ellerbee had come to a tragic end.
In his statement to law enforcement, Jerry Marcus revealed the motive behind his brutal act. He claimed that he had strangled Wydeane over a debt that she owed him. With his confession and the corroborating evidence, Jerry Marcus was charged with the murder of Wydeane Ellerbee. He was subsequently convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison, bringing a measure of justice for a life cut tragically short.
