Elaine Louise Zeigler, a 15-year-old girl from Parkman, Ohio, disappeared on New Year's Eve in 1975 while vacationing with her family at a KOA campground near Brooksville, Florida. She was last seen heading to the camp showers, but never returned. Initially, authorities suspected she had run away, as some witnesses claimed to have seen a girl matching her description riding a motorbike and stating she was returning to Ohio.
However, other reports indicated that Elaine had been seen speaking with a man in his twenties near the shower area before entering his car, a light blue 1966 Ford Fairlane with Florida license plates.
Elaine's remains were discovered years later at the home of Billy Mansfield Jr., a convicted serial killer. Mansfield, who was responsible for the murders of at least five women between 1975 and 1980, buried the bodies of four victims at his family home in Spring Hill, Florida. Elaine was among those victims. Mansfield was ultimately convicted of multiple murders and sentenced to life imprisonment. His crimes spanned both Florida and California, where he raped and strangled another victim before being apprehended.
Elaine's tragic fate remained a mystery for decades until her remains were identified through forensic investigations. The discovery of her body at Mansfield's property confirmed that she had been abducted and murdered, rather than having run away as initially suspected. The case stands as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by serial predators and the importance of continued forensic advancements in solving cold cases.
