Catherine Medina, a 50-year-old woman, was tragically murdered on August 18, 1974. She was last seen drinking at a local bar in San Pedro, California, following an argument with her husband. After the dispute, her husband attempted to escort her home, but she suddenly ran off in an inebriated state and reportedly entered a cab driven by Adolph Laudenberg. The next day, Catherine Medina’s naked body was discovered beside some bushes in Harbor Lake Recreational Park.
Medical examiners confirmed that she had been raped and then strangled to death.
Adolph Laudenberg, known as "The Santa Strangler," was later identified as the perpetrator behind Catherine Medina’s murder, along with several other similar crimes. Laudenberg was a cab driver in the San Pedro area during the late 1960s and 1970s. His modus operandi involved picking up vulnerable women—often lonely, alcoholic, or ill—who reminded him of his ex-wife. He would then bind, rape, and strangle them. Despite being questioned by police during the initial investigations, he denied any involvement, and due to the lack of evidence, he was not arrested at the time.
The case remained unsolved for decades until advancements in DNA technology allowed investigators to reopen cold cases from the 1970s. In 2002, law enforcement officers began reexamining the murders of Catherine Medina, Lois Petrie, Anna Felch, and Leah Griffin, all of whom had been raped and strangled in a similar manner. Laudenberg had previously confessed to murdering four women to his daughters-in-law, Jeanne and Renée Laudenberg, referring to them as his "four sins." However, his confessions were initially dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
Eventually, DNA evidence linked Laudenberg to the crimes, leading to his arrest in 2003. He was convicted of one murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in 2015 at the age of 89 while serving his sentence.
