Denise Stahlhut, a 21-year-old woman, was tragically murdered on December 3, 1977. She had been married for just one week before her untimely death. Stahlhut worked as a waitress at a tavern in southern Illinois and was last seen leaving her workplace that evening. Witnesses reported seeing a man matching the description of Herman Edward Lamb Jr. following her out of the establishment.
Her frozen body was discovered eight days later in the trunk of her car at a truck stop.
Herman Edward Lamb Jr. was later convicted of the rape and murder of Stahlhut. He had a history of violent crimes spanning multiple states, including Oklahoma and Florida. Lamb was implicated in several other cases, including the 1985 murder of his ex-wife and her four children, though he was acquitted in that case. He was also convicted of the 1987 murder of Bonnie Sue Loker, a dancer in Florida. Lamb was sentenced to more than 100 years in prison for Stahlhut's murder, ensuring he would never be released. Stahlhut's family attended hearings over the years to prevent his parole.
The case remained unsolved for decades until new evidence emerged in 1999, prompting authorities to reopen the investigation. Physical evidence, including a semen sample that matched Lamb's blood type, was crucial in securing his conviction. Lamb was known for frequently changing his appearance, making him difficult to track. He worked various jobs, including as a roofer, horse trainer, and pipeline worker, which allowed him to move frequently.
Stahlhut's family found some closure when Lamb passed away in prison on November 30, 2020. Although the exact cause of his death remains unknown, his passing meant that her family no longer had to fight to keep him behind bars. Despite the pain of losing their loved one, they expressed relief that Lamb could no longer harm anyone else.
