On September 12, 1984, Linda Johnson, a 28-year-old African American woman, returned to her hometown of Selma, California, from Long Beach, where she had been living with her boyfriend, Melvin Cooper. After visiting her ailing mother in the hospital, she went to her family home. The following morning, around 5 a.m., a fire engulfed the Johnson residence.
