She had traveled to the area for a hiking trip and was spotted in a general store with an older man whose hair was graying. The man claimed to be a preacher who traveled to campsites along the Appalachian Trail. Witnesses described Miliani as appearing nervous during the encounter. She and the man purchased a sleeping bag before leaving the store, and that was the last confirmed sighting of her.
Miliani's disappearance remained a mystery for years, with her father, Anibal Miliani, tirelessly searching for answers. Eventually, suspicions arose that she may have fallen victim to Gary Michael Hilton, a serial killer known as the 'National Forest Serial Killer.' Hilton was convicted of multiple murders committed between 2007 and 2008, targeting hikers in national forests across North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. His modus operandi involved stalking victims on remote trails, robbing them, and ultimately killing them.
Although Hilton was never formally charged in connection with Miliani's disappearance, there are strong indications that he may have been involved. A sketch based on witness descriptions of the man seen with Miliani closely resembled Hilton. Additionally, Hilton was known to frequent the Appalachian Trail and had a history of targeting hikers. Despite these connections, Hilton has refused to speak about Miliani's case, leaving her fate officially unresolved.
