On April 17, 1946, David Garrett, a white male storekeeper in Aiken, South Carolina, was brutally murdered in his shop. The assailant, Monroe Hickson, an African American man also known by the alias "Blue Boy," attacked Garrett with an axe, killing him and stealing a pistol and $22 in cash.
