In September 1975, 13-year-old white girl Kim Ghelkins disappeared from North Charleston, South Carolina. Investigators discovered that she had been staying at the home of Donald 'Pee Wee' Gaskins, a local man with a criminal history. Although Kim was missing, authorities found some of her clothing in Gaskins' residence, leading to his arrest on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. ​
