Ashley Ellerin, a 22-year-old Caucasian woman, was tragically murdered on February 21, 2001, in her Hollywood home. Ellerin was a fashion student at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles and had aspirations of becoming a prominent designer. On the night of her death, she had plans to attend a Grammy after-party with actor Ashton Kutcher, whom she had met through friends. Kutcher arrived at her home late that evening but left after receiving no response at the door, assuming he had been stood up. Unbeknownst to him, Ellerin had already been brutally attacked inside her residence.
Ellerin was found the following morning by her roommate, Jennifer Disisto. Her body was discovered near the entrance to the bathroom, and paramedics pronounced her dead shortly thereafter. The autopsy revealed that Ellerin had been stabbed 47 times, with 12 of the wounds deemed fatal on their own. The investigation into Ellerin's murder led to the arrest of Michael Gargiulo, a neighbor who was later identified as a serial killer known as 'The Hollywood Ripper.' Gargiulo was linked to multiple murders and an attempted murder spanning several years. He was charged with Ellerin's murder and convicted in 2019 after a lengthy trial. During the trial, Ashton Kutcher testified about the events of the night, providing crucial details that corroborated the timeline of the crime.
Gargiulo's conviction marked the culmination of nearly two decades of legal proceedings. He was sentenced to death for the murders of Ashley Ellerin and another victim, Maria Bruno, as well as the attempted murder of Michelle Murphy. The case highlighted the chilling nature of Gargiulo's crimes and brought some measure of justice to Ellerin's family and loved ones.
