He had visited his grandparents in Marshall and stayed with friends in Chicago before disappearing five days after his arrival. His mother, Nancy Cassada, described him as a free spirit who frequently traveled but always maintained contact with his family.
Prestidge was last seen meeting a friend for coffee near Bughouse Square.
Prestidge was later identified as one of the victims of John Wayne Gacy, a notorious serial killer and sex offender who murdered at least 33 young men and boys between 1962 and 1977. Gacy, known as 'The Killer Clown' due to his public performances as a clown, was convicted of 33 murders, making his case one of the most significant in U.S. legal history. Prestidge's remains were discovered buried under the crawl space of Gacy's home, and dental records confirmed his identity in January 1979. Gacy was sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection at Statesville Correctional Center on May 10, 1994.
The investigation into Gacy's crimes was extensive, with authorities uncovering the remains of multiple victims in his home. Prestidge was among those identified, and his case contributed to the overwhelming evidence against Gacy.
