Thomas Sylvester Steele, a 36-year-old Black man, was tragically found dead on August 14, 1986, at the intersection of 71st Street and Halldale Avenue in Harvard Park, Los Angeles. His death is believed to be connected to the infamous serial killer known as the 'Grim Sleeper,' Lonnie David Franklin Jr. Franklin, a former city trash collector and vehicle mechanic, was arrested on July 7, 2010, after DNA evidence linked him to multiple murders spanning from 1985 to 2007.
Despite the connection, Franklin was not formally charged in Steele's case, although authorities suspect it is related to the other killings attributed to Franklin.
The Grim Sleeper targeted vulnerable individuals, primarily Black women, many of whom were sex workers or struggled with addiction. Steele's death, however, stands out as he was one of the few male victims associated with this case. Franklin's modus operandi involved shooting his victims and leaving their bodies in secluded areas. The investigation into Steele's death and its connection to Franklin's crimes highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in piecing together evidence in serial murder cases.
Franklin was eventually convicted of ten counts of murder and sentenced to death in 2016. His crimes left a lasting impact on the community, and the discovery of photographs of potential victims at his home raised concerns about the true extent of his actions.
