On September 15, 2005, Susan Barker, a 63-year-old white woman, was found shot to death alongside her husband, Don Barker, age 62, in their home on White's Farm Road in Iredell County, North Carolina. The couple, well-known in their community, were discovered in their kitchen, victims of an apparent double homicide. The violent nature of the crime shocked the local residents, prompting an extensive investigation by the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.
The investigation revealed that the Barkers' deaths were connected to another double homicide that occurred earlier that year. On January 21, 2005, James Powell, 74, and his wife Delet Powell, 71, were also found shot to death in their home in Union Grove, North Carolina. Forensic analysis determined that the same firearm was used in both double homicides, suggesting a link between the two cases. This connection intensified the investigation, leading authorities to focus on potential suspects who had access to both households.
After conducting over 700 interviews and dedicating countless hours to the case, investigators arrested Barbara Ann Evans, a 65-year-old white woman residing at 138 Jennings Road, on July 26, 2006. Evans was charged with four counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of the Barkers and the Powells. She was a known acquaintance of both couples, frequently visiting Barker's Grocery, a store owned by Don Barker, where she would cash checks and purchase items. A search of Evans' home led to the discovery of the murder weapon, further implicating her in the crimes.
Despite the compelling evidence, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn. In 2009, a judge ruled that Evans was mentally unfit to stand trial due to a diagnosis of dementia. The court determined that her condition was progressively deteriorating and that she was unlikely to recover sufficiently to participate in her defense. As a result, all charges against her were dismissed, leaving the families of the victims without the closure of a trial.
