Stephanie Ann Claunch was a 13-year-old White girl from the Lawrenceburg area whose life ended on July 25, 2000, when she was found in the Kentucky River. Her death was initially described in public notices as an apparent drowning, yet the circumstances lingered in the community as something that didn’t sit easily, the kind of loss that leaves people replaying the last ordinary moments before everything went wrong.
Her body was recovered at Lock 5 on the Kentucky River, in the stretch between Anderson and Woodford counties. She had been born on February 17, 1987, and those who knew her were left with a hard-to-answer question that often follows river deaths: how a familiar place, a summer day, and a moving current could suddenly turn final.
As investigators looked for clarity, her name became linked—at least in suspicion—to a man whose violence would soon shock central Kentucky. Rodney Troy Bixler, a Lawrenceburg man later known for a string of brutal crimes, was suspected in connection with Claunch’s drowning but was never charged in her death. The case, in that sense, remained a shadow beside the better-documented horrors that followed.
Bixler was arrested on November 1, 2000, after a series of crimes that included murders and sexual assaults. Court outcomes in his own prosecutions unfolded over the years: he received substantial prison time across multiple convictions and pleas tied to the killings and other attacks attributed to him during 2000, and he remained in Kentucky custody long after the headlines faded. Even with that extensive criminal record, the suspicion surrounding Claunch never turned into a formal charge, leaving her death without an arrest or courtroom resolution directly tied to her name.
