Tamecka Smith, an 18-year-old African American female, tragically lost her life on December 9, 1993. She was shot to death by Michael Bell, who was seeking revenge for the death of his brother, Lamar Bell. Lamar Bell had been killed in a shoot-out with Theodore Wright, which was ruled as justifiable homicide committed in self-defense. Michael Bell, driven by a desire for vengeance, meticulously planned and executed the murder of Tamecka Smith and Jimmy West, who was Theodore Wright's
half-brother.
On the night of December 9, 1993, Michael Bell, armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, approached a yellow Plymouth car in the parking lot of a liquor lounge in Jacksonville, Florida. Bell mistakenly believed that Theodore Wright was inside the car. However, the car had been sold to Jimmy West, who was accompanied by Tamecka Smith and another female. As West and Smith entered the car, Bell fired twelve bullets into West and four into Smith at point-blank range. Smith succumbed to her injuries while being transported to the hospital.
Michael Bell was arrested on September 15, 1994, and subsequently indicted on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Jimmy West and Tamecka Smith. During the trial in March 1995, Bell pleaded not guilty by reason of self-defense, claiming that he believed West had reached for a weapon before he began shooting. Despite his defense, the jury found Bell guilty of both murders and unanimously recommended the death penalty for each count. Bell was sentenced to death on June 2, 1995.
